Manchester United’s deadline-day signing, Senne Lammens, may be walking into the toughest challenge of his young career, but he has already received a glowing endorsement from one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Thibaut Courtois.

United legend Rio Ferdinand, speaking on his show Rio Ferdinand Presents, revealed that the Real Madrid shot-stopper personally vouched for the Belgian keeper, describing him as a talent destined for greatness. Ferdinand, however, admitted he still has reservations about how quickly Lammens will adapt to the unforgiving pace of the Premier League.

Lammens, 22, joined United from Royal Antwerp in the final hours of the summer transfer window as part of Ruben Amorim’s squad rebuild. Despite his lack of Premier League experience, the 6ft 5in goalkeeper has been earmarked as one for the future, with United looking for long-term depth behind André Onana.

“I was concerned at first,” Ferdinand said. “But then I spoke to Courtois, and he gave me a resounding judgement. He told me Lammens has got great potential. That kind of backing from a world-class goalkeeper should not be taken lightly.”

The former England defender noted that the Premier League is an entirely different beast compared to the Belgian Pro League, warning that patience will be key. “He’s going to need a little bit of time adjusting to the league. But the potential is there. I just hope the club gives him the opportunity to showcase his ability.”

Ferdinand’s comments echo the debate among United supporters, many of whom are excited by the Belgian’s raw attributes but worry about the pressure that comes with playing at Old Trafford. Lammens has represented Belgium at youth level and was once considered one of Club Brugge’s brightest prospects before moving to Antwerp.

The young keeper’s arrival comes at a time when United are battling to reassert themselves both in the Premier League and in Europe. Amorim is expected to rotate in domestic cup games, meaning Lammens could get chances to prove his worth sooner than later.

For now, the message from United’s camp is clear: Lammens is one for the future. But with Courtois himself tipping the youngster for success, expectations will only grow louder in the weeks to come.
