The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested six suspects, including a correctional service officer, in connection with the theft of gold ornaments valued at more than ₦109.5 million in Ka’oje, Bagudo Local Government Area.

Police spokesperson, SP Nafiu Abubakar, confirmed the arrests in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the investigation followed a complaint lodged on 4 September 2025 at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Birnin Kebbi.

According to police findings, the theft occurred between 2024 and 2025 when burglars broke into the residence of Hajiya Rabi in Ka’oje and carted away jewellery belonging to her daughter, Hajiya Amina Hassan Bello, and other relatives. The stolen items included five gold necklaces, nine bangles, and four rings weighing 782.7 grams.

Detectives traced the crime to Ibrahim Abubakar, an officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, who confessed to the burglary. He allegedly sold the gold to buyers identified as Sa’adu Ibrahim Darhami and Hamza Ahmad, both of Sokoto State; Nasiru Sani of Birnin Kebbi; and Tasi’u Umar of Zauro town.

The officer was reportedly assisted by Ibrahim Usman Oroji, who helped dispose of some of the ornaments and collected ₦2.5 million as his share. Another accomplice, Mustapha Hassan, allegedly concealed the proceeds by arranging the purchase of two plots of land in Birnin Kebbi metropolis.

Recovered exhibits include two golden bangles, a Haojue motorcycle, an iPhone 16, a Samsung Galaxy Ultra, and a Samsung Flip phone. Police say efforts are ongoing to track down more accomplices and recover additional stolen property.

The case has raised fresh concerns about rising insider crime within Nigeria’s security agencies and the growing black market for stolen gold in the northern region.
