Calvin Bassey has expressed delight after scoring his first-ever goal for Nigeria’s Super Eagles in their 1-1 draw with South Africa at the Toyota Stadium.
The Fulham defender struck on the stroke of half-time, rising to head home Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s superb cross and cancel out the Bafana Bafana’s opener.
The 25-year-old, who has made 32 appearances for the three-time African champions, described the goal as one of the proudest moments of his international career.
“Honoured to wear this shirt and score my first goal. We didn’t win but we keep believing, if anyone can do it, it is God,” Bassey wrote on social media after the match.
Despite the draw leaving Nigeria’s World Cup hopes in jeopardy, Bassey stressed that the team will continue to fight for a place at the 2026 finals. The Super Eagles must win their last two qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic to stand any chance of advancing.
The former Rangers star has grown into a reliable figure in the national team setup, praised for his defensive strength and leadership at the back. His goal against South Africa not only boosted team morale but also underlined his growing influence on the squad.
Fans have since flooded his posts with congratulatory messages, hailing his dedication and determination to push Nigeria closer to the World Cup dream.
