Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal has hailed Barcelona wonderkid Lamine Yamal as one of the brightest stars of world football but made it clear he will not be casting a Ballon d’Or vote in the teenager’s favour.
Speaking to Cadena SER from Spain’s camp ahead of the international break, Carvajal described Yamal’s meteoric rise as “incredible,” noting that the 18-year-old’s ability to dominate games at such a young age is extraordinary. He admitted that Yamal’s performances make him a legitimate contender for the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
The Barcelona forward has enjoyed a dream year, spearheading Hansi Flick’s treble-winning side and dazzling at Euro 2024. His exploits have earned him a place among the 30 nominees for this year’s prestigious award, placing him in contention with football’s elite.
Carvajal, however, distanced himself from the heated debate over whether Yamal should become the youngest Ballon d’Or winner in history. “He could be among the candidates, especially because of his youth,” the Madrid skipper said. “At 18, I was still at Castilla. To make a difference at that age in professional football is very difficult.”
Despite the praise, the defender quickly dismissed the idea of making his choice public. “Since I’m not going to vote, I’m not going to give it to anyone because I’m not the captain. So I’m off the hook,” he added with a smile.
Should Yamal claim the Ballon d’Or this October, he would etch his name into football history as the youngest-ever recipient since the award was created in 1956. It would also be a seismic moment in the rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona, with Carvajal’s acknowledgment serving as a rare show of respect across the divide.
The ceremony, scheduled for Paris later this year, is expected to attract global attention, with Yamal’s candidacy already stirring conversation among fans, pundits, and former players. Whether his youth becomes a disadvantage or a defining edge remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Lamine Yamal’s name is already being spoken in the same breath as legends.
