Nollywood actor and director Afeez Abiodun Owo has finally opened up on the storm that shook his marriage to actress Mide Martins, admitting that social media almost cost them their union.

The actor revealed this while appearing on the Behind The Fame podcast, nine years after the couple’s separation became a national talking point. Back in April 2016, Mide Martins had shocked fans when she accused Owo of leaving their matrimonial home for three months following a disagreement over their children’s welfare. The post went viral instantly, sparking rumours that the marriage had collapsed.

Owo admitted that the crisis began with a minor misunderstanding but escalated out of control the moment it hit the internet. “The news of our separation went viral. That fight was our first and last as a couple, but it became too serious because it played out on social media,” he confessed.

According to him, his reaction worsened matters. He explained that he only intended to cool off in a hotel for two nights but extended his absence after Mide’s post accused him of abandoning his family. “I felt provoked. Instead of returning, I decided to stay away for more days. That was my mistake,” he said.

Despite the public meltdown, reconciliation eventually came when Mide apologised to her husband. “She came to me, we talked, and we reconciled. It was an issue we could have resolved in the bedroom, but because it went online, it turned into a storm,” Owo added, stressing that couples should keep private matters off social media.

The couple, who married in 2003 after the death of Mide’s mother, veteran actress Funmi Martins, are today seen as one of Nollywood’s resilient unions. Owo noted that the experience taught him the dangers of letting outsiders dictate the narrative of a marriage.

Their survival story has now become a reference point for Nollywood lovers: a reminder that while stardom brings fame, it also brings scrutiny—and that one wrong post can magnify a family quarrel into a national scandal.
