The Catholic community in Nsukka and beyond was thrown into mourning on Friday following the death of Bishop Emeritus of Nsukka Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Francis Emmanuel Ogbonna Okobo. The revered cleric passed away in the early hours of August 29, 2025, at the age of 89.
A statement signed by Rev. Fr. Amuluche Greg Nnamani, Vicar General of the Diocese, confirmed the passing of the retired bishop, describing him as “a father of faith and a shepherd who gave his all to God and the Church.” His death marks the end of an era for the Nsukka Diocese, which he nurtured from its infancy into one of the most vibrant in Nigeria.
Born on November 4, 1936, Okobo was ordained a Catholic priest on June 4, 1966, dedicating nearly six decades to priestly service. His leadership journey reached a defining moment on November 19, 1990, when he was appointed the first bishop of the newly created Nsukka Diocese by Pope John Paul II. He was consecrated on January 6, 1991, in Rome.
For over two decades, Bishop Okobo championed the growth of Catholic faith and education in Enugu State, overseeing the establishment of parishes, schools, and pastoral centres that remain vital to the diocese today. Known for his humility and discipline, he was a spiritual father to both clergy and laity.
After reaching the statutory retirement age of 80, Bishop Okobo stepped down on April 13, 2013, handing the reins of leadership to his successor, Bishop Godfrey Igwebuike Onah. Even in retirement, he remained a guiding light, offering counsel to priests, seminarians, and lay leaders.
Tributes have since flooded social media and church platforms. Parishioners and fellow clergy hailed him as a “visionary pioneer” who laid the foundation for Nsukka’s Catholic identity. Many recalled his pastoral visits, his firm defense of Catholic doctrine, and his emphasis on education as a tool for evangelisation.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Diocese in the coming days, with thousands of faithful anticipated to attend what is expected to be a historic farewell for the first shepherd of Nsukka. For the Catholic Church in Enugu State and Nigeria at large, Bishop Francis Okobo leaves behind a legacy of faith, service, and leadership that will endure for generations.
