Saudi Arabia’s monarch, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have expressed profound grief over the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a respected statesman who strengthened Nigeria’s bilateral relationship with the Kingdom during his tenure.

The Saudi royals, in separate condolence cables sent on Monday, July 15, addressed their heartfelt sympathies to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Nigerian people, and the family of the deceased leader. The messages praised Buhari’s legacy of service and his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s development and global diplomacy.

King Salman, in his statement, described Buhari as “a friend of the Kingdom” who contributed significantly to deepening religious, economic, and security cooperation between Riyadh and Abuja. He extended his condolences to the Nigerian president and the citizens of the Federal Republic, praying for Allah’s mercy on the late leader.

Buhari’s presidency witnessed strategic cooperation between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, especially in counterterrorism, Hajj operations, and bilateral trade, with both nations working to stabilize global oil prices. His death has drawn tributes from across the Middle East, where he was respected as a Pan-African voice and advocate for economic sovereignty.

His body is expected to arrive at Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina later today, with final burial rites scheduled in Daura by 2:00 p.m., in accordance with Islamic traditions. Security has been tightened around the Katsina axis, as foreign delegations and dignitaries prepare to attend the solemn ceremony.

President Bola Tinubu earlier declared seven days of national mourning in Buhari’s honour, as world leaders, including King Charles III, French President Emmanuel Macron, and now the Saudi royal family, continue to send their condolences, marking the passing of one of Africa’s most influential post-colonial leaders.
