Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has dismissed reports suggesting his involvement in any political coalition or defection plans, declaring his unwavering allegiance to the Labour Party (LP). He stated categorically that his loyalty remains with the party under which he emerged victorious in the 2023 governorship election.
Speaking during an interactive session with the Abia State Global Economic Advisory Council in Umuahia on Tuesday, July 2, Otti said he had neither been invited to nor attended any of the recent opposition meetings in Abuja, contrary to speculation linking him to the growing coalition movement reportedly championed by figures like Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi.
The governor emphasized that his full focus remains on delivering transformative governance and economic growth in Abia, warning that political distractions will not be entertained under his leadership. “Our people didn’t elect us to play politics. They voted for change, development, and accountability. That’s what I’m here to deliver,” he said.
Otti also addressed questions surrounding his relationship with opposition figures across party lines, clarifying that while political dialogue is healthy in a democracy, he has not made any commitments to alliances outside the Labour Party. “I’ve received no invitation and attended no meeting. I remain Labour, through and through,” he affirmed.
His statement comes amid a flurry of speculation following the high-profile ADC-led opposition conference in Abuja, which drew political leaders from PDP, LP, SDP, and APC factions. Although many expected Otti to be part of the gathering, his absence stood out — prompting online discussions about his political future.
The Labour Party in Abia has also echoed Otti’s stance, urging members and supporters to remain focused and ignore what it described as “coordinated misinformation.” Party officials insist that Otti remains a vital pillar in the party’s national structure and any reports to the contrary are politically motivated.
With increasing chatter about 2027 realignments, Governor Otti’s firm declaration could solidify his influence as one of the most consistent voices within the LP, even as political temperatures continue to rise across Nigeria.
