Shock and outrage have gripped residents of Nsukka, Enugu State, after a young woman, Chisom Ayogu, was brutally murdered by her ex-boyfriend, Ogbonna “Mourinho,” during what should have been a joyful visit. The 27-year-old had reportedly gone to share news of her upcoming wedding with Ogbonna when the meeting took a deadly turn.
Chisom, a native of Amufie in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area, visited Ogbonna’s residence along New Anglican Road in Nsukka on Tuesday, May 13, 2025. Neighbours said they overheard a heated exchange that soon escalated into violence. Moments later, Chisom was found unconscious, clinging to life.
Attempts to save her failed. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. A resident who witnessed the aftermath said, “She was breathing faintly when we got there. We had no idea things would end this way.” Her body was later moved to a local mortuary, pending autopsy and further investigation.
The suspect, Ogbonna, a native of Igogoro, also in Igbo-Eze North, was immediately apprehended by the police and remains in custody at the Nsukka Police Division. Law enforcement officers confirmed that he is undergoing intense interrogation to determine the motive behind the murder, believed to be tied to unresolved emotional issues from the former relationship.
Family members of the deceased are demanding swift justice, calling on the Enugu State Police Command to ensure that the case is not swept under the carpet. The incident has reignited public debate on gender-based violence, emotional abuse, and the dangers women face when dealing with unstable former partners.
Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, stated that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that the suspect will be charged once preliminary findings are complete. He urged individuals experiencing emotional distress or jealousy to seek help rather than resort to violence.
As condolences continue to pour in on social media, women’s rights advocates are using the tragedy as a rallying cry for stronger protection laws. Chisom’s death, coming just weeks before her traditional marriage, has left a deep scar in her community—and her name may now become a symbol in the fight against intimate partner violence in Nigeria.
