The Senate on Tuesday lamented the collapse of the 21-storey building in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

The senate position followed a point of order raised on the matter by the senator representing Lagos Central Senatorial District, Oluremi Tinubu.

Members of the red chamber observed a minute silence in honour of the victims of the building collapse.

About 42 persons were killed after the 21-storey building collapsed last week in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Tinubu said 16 persons were rescued alive, while efforts were ongoing to rescue others still trapped in the ill-fated building.

The Senate President Ahmad Lawan, in his remarks, urged professional bodies to ensure that only competent and qualified professionals were involved in construction works.

He said, “This is one collapse too many and it is unfortunate. This is to call on the leadership of COREN and other professional bodies in the construction industry to maintain the highest degree of competence.

“They should also ensure that only qualified and certified professionals are engaged in construction to avert the type of tragedy that happened in Ikoyi.”
