Nora Aunor, the revered “Superstar” of Philippine cinema, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at the age of 71. Her daughter, Lotlot de León, announced her mother’s death on Instagram, expressing deep sorrow but did not disclose the cause of death. ​

Born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor on May 21, 1953, in Iriga City, Camarines Sur, Aunor’s illustrious career spanned over five decades. She initially gained fame in the 1960s as a singer before transitioning to acting, where she amassed more than 200 film and television credits. Her notable works include “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos” (1976), “Bulaklak sa City Jail” (1984), and “The Flor Contemplacion Story” (1995). In 1990, she achieved a grand slam, winning Best Actress awards from all major Philippine award-giving bodies for her performance in “Andrea, Paano ba ang Maging Isang Ina?” ​

Aunor’s contributions to the arts were recognized internationally. She won Best Actress at the Asian Film Awards for her role in “Thy Womb” (2012) and was the first Filipino actor inducted into the Asia Pacific Screen Academy. ​

In 2005, she was arrested for possession of methamphetamine in the United States, but the charges were later dropped after she completed a diversion program.
