Journalists in Imo State are set to receive specialized training in data-driven reporting, as Harsco Media & Communications, in collaboration with Open Knowledge Foundation and Dataopian, hosts the Open Data Day 2025 Workshop on Thursday, March 6, 2025, in Owerri.
Themed “Empowering Journalists to Leverage Open Data for Climate and Agricultural Reporting,” the event aims to bridge the gap in data literacy among journalists, equipping them with skills to analyze and visualize open data for impactful storytelling on climate change and agriculture.

Recent reports highlight the urgency of data-driven journalism in tackling climate issues in Imo State. Flooding in 2024 displaced 7,832 people and impacted over 60,761 residents, while 16% of erosion incidents in Owerri were linked to excessive rainfall. Experts argue that journalists must adopt investigative techniques backed by data to expose these crises and push for sustainable policies.
The workshop will feature leading industry experts, including: Udochukwu Chukwu – Investigative Journalism & Open Data
Chinedu Hardy Nwadike – Data Sourcing & Visualization
Adanna Ononiwu – Development Opportunities for Journalists
Participants will explore real-world case studies on flooding, erosion, and agricultural productivity, learning how to use Open Data Editor and visualization tools to enhance their reports. The training will also cover fact-checking, data storytelling techniques, and leveraging digital tools for investigative journalism.
According to Harriet Ijeomah, a media development advocate, this initiative is crucial for equipping rural reporters with the tools to hold policymakers accountable.
“The impact of climate change is evident, but many journalists lack the skills to source and interpret data effectively. This workshop will empower them to create compelling reports that drive action and solutions,” she stated.
With support from Open Knowledge Foundation and Dataopian, this initiative is set to transform climate and agricultural reporting in Nigeria, ensuring journalists play a more active role in shaping public discourse through evidence-based journalism.
