The United Progressive Party, UPP governorship candidate in Imo State, Tony Nwulu, has continued to demonstrate an uncommon passion for humanity when at the weekend he wrote off the medical bills of some indigent patients totaling N10million naria at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

Nwulu has continued to receive accolades from well meaning Nigerians for his unique contribution to national development by sponsoring the Not Too Young To Run Act and lately for his contribution to humanity by paying the bills of patients in hospitals.

Last week, he had doled cash to some women at Orlu Teaching Hospital,Orlu particularly one Mrs. Gloria Oriuwa who had no dime to pay her huge hospital bills after having her baby through ceaseran operation.

In Nigerian hospitals, it has been customary for patients to be “detained” in hospitals for non payment of bills. This has led many patients to languish in hospitals, a trend Nwulu described as pathetic and would compel him to review the the primary health care of the State when he is elected Governor of Imo State.

Accompanied by his running mate, Dr Nnaemeka Obiareri, DG, Mezie Imo Campaign Organization, Mr. Kelechi Chukwu and some of his supporters, Nwulu said his desire in offsetting the bills was driven by the commitment of members of his team to ensure patients re unite with their families.

He said his resolve to pay the bills of the patients were driven by the need to focus on primary focus health care which will attract huge consideration when he is elected Governor of Imo State.

“We shall review the old guidelines for the delivery of primary health care services;employ contemporary best practices that would impact significantly on the majority of our rural populace.”

“We shall seek partnerships with NGOs both local and international in providing free medical services to our people” he said.

The deputy governorship candidate of UPP, Dr. Obiareri said it has become common for hospitals to “detain” many mothers after they were delivered of their babies for failure to pay hospital bills.
