Missing 24-Year-Old Ghanaian Joseph Owusu Found Dead at New York Dumpsite
A 24-year-old Ghanaian man, identified as Joseph Owusu, has been found dead at a dumpsite in the Bronx, New York, nearly two weeks after he was reported missing.
Owusu’s death was confirmed by Ghana’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
According to reports, his body was discovered among discarded waste by a scrap collector on Tuesday, November 3, bringing an end to the search for the missing young man.
Owusu worked as a caregiver, supporting people living with disabilities. He was also a chorister and organist at the Ghana United Methodist Church in the Bronx, where members of the congregation remembered him for his dedication to music and his warm personality.
Following confirmation of his death, officials of Ghana’s Permanent Mission visited his family to convey the government’s condolences.
Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed sadness over the incident and assured the bereaved family of the government’s support.
The minister also pledged that Ghanaian authorities would work with relevant United States agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding Owusu’s death.
His family has called for a transparent investigation to establish what happened to him and determine how he died.
The Permanent Mission disclosed that an autopsy was being conducted as investigations continued. However, the cause of death and the circumstances leading to the discovery of his body had not been officially established in the available reports.
Owusu’s death comes days after another Ghanaian, 15-year-old Javits Badu Nkansah Frimpong, was fatally shot in the Bronx on October 29, 2026.
The two deaths have deepened grief within the Ghanaian community in New York, with calls for answers and improved safety for members of the diaspora.
Ghanaian authorities have assured Owusu’s family of their support as investigations into his death continue.
