Fire Destroys Shops, Containers at Gezawa Market in Kano

Properties worth millions of naira have been destroyed following an early morning fire outbreak at Gezawa Market in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State.
The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident, which occurred at about 5:15 am on Monday, November 2, 2026.
The service’s Public Relations Officer, Kabiru Jafaru, disclosed the development in a statement, explaining that firefighters were alerted to the fire through a distress call from a resident identified as Ibrahim Sani.
According to the statement, the fire service immediately deployed a team to the market, where they successfully contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading to other sections.
The statement said one shop, four containers and seven temporary shops were affected, with the structures completely destroyed by the fire.
The Director of the Kano State Fire Service urged residents and traders to observe safety precautions, particularly during the harmattan season, to reduce the risk of fire outbreaks.
The incident comes days after another early morning fire destroyed dozens of structures at Kofar Ruwa Timber Market in Kano metropolis.
The fire, which occurred on Saturday, October 31, reportedly affected at least 110 buildings and structures, comprising 75 permanent buildings and 35 temporary structures across different sections of the market.
The latest incidents have renewed concerns about fire safety in Kano’s markets, where outbreaks can cause significant damage to traders’ businesses and livelihoods.
