Oyo Police Rescue Five Congolese Nationals in Suspected Human Trafficking Case

The Oyo State Police Command has rescued five Congolese nationals suspected of being victims of human trafficking after they were allegedly brought into Nigeria with promises of better economic opportunities.

The victims were rescued at Bollarz Hotel in the Araromi area of Ibadan during an intelligence-led operation, according to a statement issued by the police spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, on October 14, 2026.

The rescued individuals were identified as Bonsaly Mpika Donel, 24; Charles Siloe, 23; Eliane Ruth Makengo, 26; Makota Janie Darcel, 23; and Simba Babeki Elie, 33.

During preliminary questioning, the five nationals reportedly told investigators that a man identified as Smith, said to be a citizen of the Republic of Benin, had brought them into Nigeria by promising them improved economic prospects.

According to the police account, the man allegedly used the promise of a better life to lure the group into the country. However, he was not found at the hotel when officers carried out the rescue operation.

The police said efforts were ongoing to locate and arrest the suspect as investigations continued into the alleged trafficking arrangement. The command also appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could help investigators identify and apprehend anyone connected with the case.

Following their rescue, the five Congolese nationals reportedly received medical attention. The police said arrangements were being made to hand them over to the Nigeria Immigration Service in Oyo State for further handling.

The rescue highlights concerns about suspected human trafficking involving promises of employment and improved living conditions. However, the full circumstances of the case and the alleged role of the man identified as Smith remain subject to investigation.
