The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into the death of a 23-year-old Nigerian Law School student, Faith Alayande, at the institution’s hostel in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Alayande was found unresponsive within the hostel premises in the early hours of Friday, August 7, 2026, prompting the hostel management to alert the police. The circumstances surrounding her death have since become the subject of an ongoing investigation.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident and said the matter was reported to the police by the hostel matron. She said officers visited the scene after receiving the report and that the deceased’s remains were later taken to a morgue for preservation.
Adebisi said a hostel mate and a relative of Alayande had reportedly raised concerns after discovering a note believed to have been written by the student and began looking for her. Police are yet to establish the circumstances surrounding the note or independently determine what led to the student’s death.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama also reported the incident, stating that the Chief Matron of the Law School, Mrs Igbokwe Juliana, reported the matter at the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30am.
According to the report, the matron subsequently proceeded to the hostel, where the student was found within the premises. Preliminary observations at the scene prompted the police to begin investigations into what happened.
The Lagos State Police Command has not announced a final conclusion on the circumstances of the death. Authorities are expected to establish the facts surrounding the incident as part of the investigation.
The death has brought renewed attention to the welfare and wellbeing of students living in demanding academic and professional environments. Any concerns about students’ safety or mental wellbeing should be addressed promptly through appropriate support systems within educational institutions and communities.
Investigations by the Lagos State Police Command are ongoing, and further details are expected as authorities establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
