Relief swept across Kebbi State on Monday as the High Court judge who was abducted by suspected gunmen regained his freedom after spending one week in captivity.
The Kebbi State Police Command confirmed the judge’s release in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Bashir Usman, saying both the judge’s family and the Kebbi State Ministry of Justice had verified that he had safely returned home.
The police said the kidnappers had demanded a ransom during the period of captivity but reiterated that the Command maintained its longstanding policy of not paying ransom to criminal groups.
Despite the judge’s safe return, the Command said investigations remain ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible for the abduction. Security agencies, it added, have intensified efforts to track down the suspects and ensure they are prosecuted.
The police also appealed to residents to support the investigation by providing credible information that could lead to the arrest of the kidnappers, assuring the public that all information received would be treated with strict confidentiality.
In addition, the Command expressed appreciation to members of the public and partner security agencies for their cooperation and support throughout the rescue efforts.
A family member, who confirmed the judge’s release, described the development as a moment of great joy and thanksgiving.
“We are in jubilation and full of gratitude to God for seeing our own return safely from captivity. He was just released and has returned home now after spending one week with the bandits,” the relative said.
The family also thanked the Kebbi State Judiciary, security agencies and residents for their prayers, encouragement and solidarity during the difficult period.
“We sincerely thank and appreciate the Kebbi State Judiciary, the security agencies, and the entire people of Kebbi State who contributed in different ways, offered prayers, and sent messages of sympathy. Your concern and support gave us strength, and we are grateful.”
The family noted that details surrounding the judge’s release would be disclosed at a later time.
