The Lagos State Government has unveiled plans to introduce specialised vehicle number plates for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as part of efforts to promote inclusion, improve accessibility and make transportation more convenient across the state.
The proposal was discussed during a courtesy visit by the management of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) to the Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), where both agencies explored strategies for designing and implementing the disability-friendly vehicle identification system.
Speaking during the meeting, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Abdulrasheed Muri-Okunola, described the initiative as a significant milestone in Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision of building “A Greater Lagos That Leaves No One Behind.”
According to Muri-Okunola, the proposed number plates will make it easier to identify vehicles belonging to persons with disabilities, thereby improving accessibility, recognition and ease of movement across Lagos. He added that the initiative reflects the state’s commitment to inclusive governance and equal opportunities for all residents.
He also revealed that the agency has already begun consultations with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to facilitate the rollout of the specialised number plates. The MVAA, he said, will commence the required administrative processes while working closely with LASODA to ensure the successful implementation of the project.
Earlier, the General Manager of LASODA, Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, explained that the initiative is intended to benefit all categories of persons with disabilities, as well as parents of children living with disabilities and their caregivers.
She noted that the proposed identification system would improve recognition, accessibility and support for members of the disability community while reinforcing the government’s commitment to protecting their rights and ensuring full participation in society.
Oyetunde-Lawal also urged public institutions, private organisations and residents to embrace inclusion as a shared responsibility by supporting policies that advance the welfare and rights of persons with disabilities.
Both agencies reaffirmed their commitment to delivering the project in line with the Lagos State Special People’s Law, which established LASODA to eliminate discrimination, protect the rights of persons with disabilities and promote equal opportunities across all sectors of society.
