The Yobe State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the alleged killing and concealment of a newborn baby girl in Damaturu, the state capital.

Police authorities confirmed that the incident is being treated as a serious violent crime, with investigations currently underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit responded to a distress call on June 23, 2026, at about 4:10 p.m.

The report indicated that a newborn baby had allegedly been strangled and her remains concealed shortly after birth.

Preliminary findings suggest that a female suspect, who recently gave birth, allegedly carried out the act before hiding the infant’s body inside a box.

The box was later discovered abandoned behind a mosque in the Anguwar Boka area of Damaturu, triggering a police investigation and subsequent arrests.

The Command confirmed that two suspects are currently in custody and assisting investigators as efforts continue to uncover the full details of the incident.

Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, described the alleged act as “heinous and inhuman,” stressing that every human life must be protected regardless of circumstance.

He warned that the Command would not tolerate any form of violence against children or vulnerable persons, adding that offenders will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The police also reminded residents that every child is entitled to protection, care, and dignity under existing legal frameworks.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as more facts emerge.
