Gunmen Attack NIPSS Jos, Three Security Operatives Killed as Forces Repel Assault
A late-night attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, near Jos, has left three security operatives dead after suspected gunmen attempted to breach the highly secured institution.
The attackers reportedly stormed the nation’s foremost policy and leadership training institute at about 11:40 p.m. on Monday, opening fire and triggering a fierce gun battle with security personnel stationed at the facility.
Sources familiar with the incident said security operatives responded immediately, engaging the assailants in an exchange of gunfire that prevented them from gaining access to key areas of the institute.
A staff member of NIPSS, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed that the attack came without warning and led to a tense confrontation that lasted several minutes.
According to the source, three members of the security team attached to the institute were killed during the operation. The casualties included two soldiers and a police officer who were part of the security detail protecting the facility.
Residents of nearby communities also reported hearing sustained gunfire during the attack. Bulus Haruna, a resident of Kuru in Jos South Local Government Area, said many people were thrown into panic as the sounds of gunshots echoed through the area late into the night.
Despite the casualties, security forces successfully repelled the attackers and prevented what could have been a more devastating incident. The motive behind the assault remains unclear, with investigations still ongoing.
Meanwhile, the management of NIPSS has confirmed the security breach, assuring participants, staff and residents that the situation has been fully contained and that normal activities are continuing uninterrupted.
In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Dr. Osime Samuel, the institute said security personnel and relevant agencies acted swiftly to restore calm.
“The situation was promptly brought under control through the swift response of security personnel and relevant security agencies,” the statement said.
“There is currently no threat to the safety of participants, staff, residents or facilities of the Institute, and normal activities are continuing as scheduled.”
The institute added that security agencies have launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information while inquiries continue.
NIPSS further reaffirmed its commitment to the safety of its community and commended the professionalism and bravery of the security personnel who responded to the incident.A late-night attack on the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in Kuru, near Jos, has left three security operatives dead after suspected gunmen attempted to breach the highly secured institution.
