The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has praised Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for what he described as an unmatched commitment to transparency in campaign financing.
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television’s Day Break programme on Tuesday, Tanko claimed that Obi remains the only major presidential candidate in Nigeria to publicly account for campaign funds and expenditures.
Tanko said the former Anambra State governor took deliberate steps to ensure that every naira spent during the 2023 election campaign was independently reviewed and made available to the public.
According to him, Obi and prominent activist Aisha Yesufu jointly engaged the services of an independent auditor to scrutinise the campaign’s financial records and produce a detailed report of all expenditures.
“I was there when Aisha Yesufu and Peter Obi engaged the services of an independent auditor to review their campaign finances,” Tanko said during the interview.
He added that the exercise reflected Obi’s long-standing commitment to accountability and transparency, values he consistently promoted throughout his presidential campaign.
“They provided an account of every amount spent during the campaign. I would like to see the same level of transparency from other major parties, including the APC and PDP,” Tanko stated.
The Obidient Movement leader argued that public accountability in campaign financing is essential for strengthening trust in Nigeria’s democratic process. He maintained that political parties and candidates should be willing to disclose how campaign funds are sourced and spent.
“Peter Obi stood out because he was committed to the accountability and transparency he consistently advocated throughout the campaign,” he said.
Tanko further noted that the audited campaign report was released as a public document and remains accessible to Nigerians interested in reviewing the financial details of Obi’s presidential bid.
His remarks come amid ongoing debates about political funding, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria’s electoral process as preparations gradually begin ahead of the 2027 general elections.
