Afrobeats superstar Davido used one of football’s biggest global stages to draw attention to Nigeria’s security challenges, appearing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert in a custom-made outfit honouring abducted pupils and teachers from Oyo State.

The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, transformed his highly anticipated performance into a powerful advocacy moment by calling for urgent action to secure the release of victims kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area.

Ahead of taking the stage, Davido was seen in a viral backstage video wearing a black leather jacket decorated with green circular badges carrying the names of the abducted pupils and teachers. The striking outfit quickly generated widespread reactions on social media.

The customised badges were designed to reflect the status of the victims. Names of those still being held captive appeared in white lettering, while the names of victims who lost their lives during the ordeal were written in red.

Adding to the message, the music star wore a white T-shirt boldly branded with the word “NIGERIA,” while the back of his jacket carried the inscription “BRING THEM HOME.”

Moments before his performance, Davido expressed sympathy for the affected families and lamented the continued captivity of some victims. He also called on government authorities to accelerate efforts aimed at securing their freedom.

“Peace and love everywhere. May God be with the families of the abducted and the ones who have been killed,” Davido said.

“They still haven’t been rescued. We’re praying to God every day. We’re also praying to God that the government hastens. My country is going through a lot. We represent everywhere we go.”

The gesture has been widely viewed as an attempt to use a global entertainment platform to amplify calls for justice and action for the victims, while drawing international attention to insecurity affecting communities in Nigeria.

The FIFA World Cup Countdown Concert serves as a key event ahead of the 2026 tournament and features performances from some of the world’s biggest music stars. Davido’s participation further highlights his growing influence as a global ambassador for African music.

His appearance comes shortly after FIFA announced that Davido, alongside fellow Nigerian artists Burna Boy, Rema, and Ayra Starr, would feature on the official 2026 FIFA World Cup soundtrack album, showcasing Nigeria’s dominance on the international music scene.

For many fans, however, it was not the performance alone that stood out. The singer’s decision to spotlight the plight of abducted schoolchildren ensured that a local tragedy received worldwide attention, reinforcing calls for the victims to be safely reunited with their families.
