A community in KwaNyuswa near Hillcrest, South Africa, has been thrown into mourning after a young pharmacist who recently opened a pharmacy to improve healthcare access was brutally shot dead alongside two other workers.

Nomzila Madinane, described by residents as passionate and community-driven, was killed during a deadly attack at her pharmacy in Inchanga on May 19, 2026. A cashier working at the store and a security guard also lost their lives in the shooting.

According to reports, Madinane had established the pharmacy to help residents who often travelled long distances to access medication and basic healthcare services. Her death has sparked grief across the area, with many praising her efforts to bring medical support closer to underserved communities.

KwaZulu-Natal police confirmed that three murder cases had been opened following the incident. Authorities said unknown gunmen stormed the pharmacy and opened fire on those inside.

“Inchanga police opened three cases of murder following an incident in which two females and a security guard were shot by unknown people,” police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda said.

“The two victims were fatally shot while the security guard sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries,” he added.

Witness accounts indicated that three armed men carried out the attack, killing Madinane and the cashier at the scene. The security guard was reportedly shot while trying to stop the attackers before later dying in hospital.

The motive behind the killings remains unclear, with investigators yet to determine whether the incident was connected to robbery or another targeted attack.

The tragedy has reignited concerns over violent crime in South Africa, particularly attacks targeting small business owners and frontline workers serving local communities.
