The Imo State Police Command has unveiled a new specialised security outfit, the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), in Owerri, as part of ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening law enforcement operations and improving public safety across the state.

The launch took place at the Command Headquarters on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, following directives from the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu Rilwanu, and signals a major restructuring of tactical policing in Imo State.

The development comes after the disbandment of several previously known tactical units, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit popularly called Tiger Base, as well as the Scorpion Unit and Lion Squad. Authorities say the move is part of broader efforts to promote professionalism, accountability, and human rights compliance within police operations.

The newly formed Violent Crime Response Unit is tasked with responding to serious offences such as armed robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, cult-related violence, and illegal possession of firearms. It will operate through intelligence-led policing, rapid response strategies, and enhanced collaboration with other security agencies and local communities.

Imo State Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, described the creation of the unit as a strategic step to improve operational effectiveness and rebuild public confidence in policing. He noted that officers assigned to the VCRU were carefully selected based on discipline, competence, integrity, and field experience.

According to him, the personnel have undergone specialised training covering tactical response, intelligence gathering, crisis management, and human rights standards, with emphasis on lawful and professional conduct during operations.

As part of the reform package, a Civilian Oversight Board was also inaugurated to monitor the activities of the unit. The board includes representatives from religious groups, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists, with a mandate to enhance transparency and accountability.

The state government, represented at the event by ACP Gboyako Shaba Adamu on behalf of Governor Hope Uzodinma, expressed support for the initiative, describing it as a step towards strengthening security and maintaining peace in Imo State.

The police command urged residents to cooperate with the new unit by providing timely and credible information, while assuring the public of its continued commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
