A woman accused of violently assaulting her 15-year-old daughter in the Ipaja area of Lagos State has been arrested and arraigned following widespread public outrage triggered by a viral video of the incident.

The disturbing footage, recorded at 32 Tashoro Street near Ipaja, showed the woman allegedly straddling the teenager while holding a knife after reportedly beating her inside a residential compound. The video quickly spread across social media, prompting calls for immediate action.

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (LSDVA) confirmed in a statement that it was alerted to the incident after the video surfaced online on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.

According to the agency, emergency response protocols were activated immediately, leading to the swift intervention of relevant state authorities.

The victim was rescued by the Child Protection Unit of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development and has since been placed in a shelter where she is receiving medical attention, psychological care, and other support services.

The suspect was arrested by operatives of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps and taken into custody at the Ipaja Police Station for initial questioning.

Following preliminary investigations, the case was transferred to the Family Support Unit of the Lagos State Police Command in Ipaja for further handling.

The LSDVA confirmed that the matter was subsequently charged to Court 23 of the Samuel Ilori Magistrate Court in Ogba, where it was heard on Thursday.

The defendant has now been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, pending legal advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Officials said the swift progression of the case from rescue to arraignment reflects the state’s structured response system for domestic violence and child protection cases.

The agency praised members of the public who reported and amplified the incident, describing their actions as critical to ensuring the child’s safety and the advancement of justice.

“We commend the swift collaboration of concerned Lagosians and mandated reporters in ensuring the safety of the survivor and the progression of the case through due legal process,” the agency stated.

The LSDVA reiterated that Lagos State maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward all forms of child abuse and domestic violence, stressing that offenders will be prosecuted under the law.

It also urged residents to continue reporting cases of abuse through official hotlines and designated response channels to enable rapid intervention.

The development comes amid renewed concern over child abuse cases in Nigeria, following similar incidents reported in other states in recent months.
