A seven-month-old girl has been shot dead while sitting in her pushchair during a brazen daylight attack in Brooklyn, New York, in what police believe was a gang-related shooting gone wrong.

Authorities say the infant was not the intended target but was caught in the line of fire as gunmen struck on a busy street in the Williamsburg neighbourhood.

According to police, surveillance footage shows two men riding a motorbike against traffic before the passenger pulled out a gun and fired “at least two rounds” toward a group gathered on a street corner. At the time, several adults and children — including two infants in buggies — were present.

The motorbike later crashed, leading to the arrest of the suspected shooter, while a “massive” manhunt has been launched for the driver who fled the scene, police confirmed.

In the chaos that followed the gunfire, the baby’s parents rushed into a nearby shop seeking safety. It was there they discovered their child had been struck.

Reacting to the tragedy, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the incident as heartbreaking.

“A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant,” he said, adding that the killing underscores the urgent need to tackle gun violence across the city.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns over public safety, particularly the growing risk posed by targeted attacks spilling into civilian spaces. Investigations remain ongoing as police intensify efforts to locate the second suspect.
