The Imo State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) marked the nationwide 60th anniversary of the association with a thanksgiving service at the Maria Assumpta Cathedral, Owerri, on Sunday. Members, led by chapter chairman Cosmos Chukwuemeka, left the sports pitch to honour God for guiding their careers and the growth of sports journalism in Nigeria.

The service provided an opportunity for members to reflect on the vital role of sports in society. The Catholic Bishop of Owerri Archdiocese, Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, reminded attendees that thanksgiving is a core practice, drawing parallels with the Israelites who celebrated harvests at the end of every year.

Congratulating sports journalists nationwide on the diamond jubilee, Bishop Ugorji praised their dedication in keeping the public informed about sporting events in Nigeria and beyond. “We need sports to remain healthy. God created us to move our joints, and sports help us learn to win or lose without bitterness,” he said.

The Metropolitan Bishop also urged politicians to embrace sportsmanship in their engagements. He stressed that politics should not be a “do-or-die affair”, highlighting the importance of respecting electoral outcomes and preparing for future contests regardless of the result.

The Imo SWAN chapter, regarded as one of the most active in the country, continues to elevate sports journalism standards. Their members, Theodore Tasie and Chris Abiaziem, are among the honorees set to be celebrated at the grand national finale in Abuja, recognizing their contributions to the industry.

Members of the chapter expressed enthusiasm for combining spiritual reflection with professional celebration, emphasizing the importance of gratitude and humility in a fast-paced sports reporting environment. The event underscored the intersection of faith, professionalism, and dedication to sports development.

As SWAN enters its seventh decade, chapters across Nigeria continue to celebrate the association’s milestones, highlighting achievements, inspiring younger journalists, and fostering a culture of excellence in sports media. The Imo service reflected this commitment, blending worship with acknowledgment of the profession’s impact on national life.
