Awo-Omamma, Imo State – The Imo State Government has rescued Mrs. Chika Ndubuisi, a widow, after she was allegedly forced by her late husband’s kinsmen to drink the water used in bathing his corpse as part of a ritual meant to prove her innocence over his death.

The shocking incident occurred in Oru East Local Government Area and was brought to the attention of the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare following alerts from a local women advocacy group.

“It is barbaric, cruel, and completely unacceptable in a civilized society that a widow, already mourning, should be subjected to such an inhuman practice,” said Lady Nkechinyere Ugwu, Commissioner of the Ministry, condemning the ritual as outdated and inhumane.

Lady Ugwu confirmed that the widow and her children have been placed under government protection, with some arrests already made in connection with the incident.

“Normalcy has been restored, and a detailed investigation is underway,” the Commissioner said, adding that collaboration with NGOs and the Local Council was key to the successful rescue.
