The Delta State Police Command has detained a police officer who was filmed shooting at the tyre of a moving car along Okpanam Road, Asaba, near Toscana Hotel — an incident that has triggered widespread outrage online.

The video, which went viral late Tuesday, showed the officer firing towards a vehicle attempting to drive away. The act was condemned by the public as reckless and a gross violation of firearm conduct.

Responding to the viral clip, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Delta Command, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that the officer had been identified and taken into custody.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday morning, Edafe described the officer’s behaviour as “embarrassing, shameful, careless, unprofessional, and unjustified.”

“The policeman has been identified, detained, and will appear before the Commissioner of Police today,” he wrote.

No injuries or casualties were reported as of the time of filing this report.

The incident has renewed public debate on police accountability, firearm control, and the urgent need for operational discipline among security personnel in Nigeria.
