Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he is prepared to shelve his presidential ambition in 2027 if a younger, widely accepted candidate emerges under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Speaking to BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday, the opposition figure stressed that his interest in the 2027 race is not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to “rescue Nigeria from those who have held it hostage.”

“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” Atiku declared.

The former PDP flagbearer, now a key player in the opposition coalition, said Nigeria’s future rests heavily on the energy and vision of younger generations. He urged young Nigerians to engage fully in politics, promising his complete support if they are chosen to lead.

Atiku dismissed suggestions that he is desperate for power, insisting his focus is on providing a credible alternative to address the country’s economic and security challenges.

“I am only interested in rescuing Nigeria. Leadership is about responsibility, not entitlement,” he added.

Atiku’s remarks are expected to stir debate within opposition ranks, where discussions about generational change and youth inclusion in politics have been growing louder.
