Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Daura, Katsina State, on Monday, July 14, 2025, to personally console the immediate family of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away a day earlier in London. Shettima, who led the federal delegation that repatriated Buhari’s body, paid his respects at the late leader’s ancestral home just hours after the burial rites concluded.

Accompanied by key government officials, the Vice President met privately with members of the Buhari family, including the late president’s widow, Aisha Buhari, and his children. He conveyed the condolences of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and expressed the Federal Government’s profound sorrow over the passing of a man he described as “a pillar of Nigerian history and integrity.”
In his remarks, Shettima said, “This is not only a loss to the family but to the entire nation. President Buhari was a symbol of discipline, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to the Nigerian project. His legacy will remain etched in the soul of this country for generations to come.” He urged the family to take solace in the enormous national and international outpouring of respect and prayers.
Security was visibly tightened across Daura, with military personnel, dignitaries, and traditional rulers flooding the quiet town. Tributes continued to pour in from across Africa, as regional leaders praised Buhari’s impact on West African diplomacy, anti-corruption efforts, and national unity during his two-term presidency from 2015 to 2023.
The visit followed a solemn but historic burial attended by federal ministers, northern elders, governors, and former heads of state. Buhari was buried at his private residence after Janazah prayers at the Daura Central Mosque, in accordance with Islamic tradition. Thousands lined the streets to witness the procession, many weeping as they chanted prayers.
Vice President Shettima’s visit marks the beginning of a series of national tribute events expected to span the week. President Tinubu has already declared a seven-day mourning period, with national flags flying at half-mast. A special session of the Federal Executive Council will be held on Tuesday, July 15, to honour the late statesman’s contributions to Nigeria’s development and democracy.
As the sun sets over Daura, the nation continues to reflect on the life of a man who, for better or worse, shaped the course of Nigeria’s political trajectory for over four decades. For Shettima and many others in government, this moment signals not just an end, but the responsibility to carry forward the values Buhari symbolized.
