Panic erupted at an FCMB branch in Owerri, Imo State, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, after a man was discovered hiding overnight in the bank’s ceiling following an alleged attempt to hack into the bank’s computer systems.

Eyewitness reports say the suspect, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, entered the banking hall during regular business hours on Tuesday, July 1, posing as a customer. He reportedly sneaked into the restroom, locked himself in, and climbed into the ceiling space, staying hidden until after the bank closed for the day.

Trouble started when staff members resumed work the following morning and noticed the restroom door was bolted from inside. After forcing the door open, they found the suspect concealed in the ceiling, with one of the bank’s computer systems allegedly showing a suspicious message that read: “Restarting. Click OK to accept.”

Security operatives and police officers were quickly summoned to the scene. However, the arrest took a violent turn. Viral videos circulating on social media platforms captured moments when the suspect was dragged out, beaten, and stomped on by both security guards and police officers right inside the banking hall.

The brutality drew widespread condemnation from human rights activists and concerned citizens. Many users on X (formerly Twitter), including the popular handle @BishopPOEvang who first shared the incident, expressed concern over both the security breach at the bank and the excessive force used during the suspect’s arrest.

Reacting to the footage, Nigeria Police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi described the officers’ conduct as “unprofessional and unacceptable.” He assured the public that a full investigation would be launched to address both the criminal attempt on the bank and the alleged police brutality witnessed during the arrest.

As of press time, FCMB management has not released an official statement addressing the breach, the suspect’s intentions, or the ongoing investigation. Meanwhile, legal experts warn that both the suspect and the officers involved in the assault could face prosecution, as public anger continues to mount online.
