Man United Stun Roma With 3-2 Comeback as Cunha Fires Carrick to First Win in 10 Games

Manchester United produced a remarkable comeback at Old Trafford, recovering from two goals down to defeat Roma 3-2 in the Champions League and secure their first victory in 10 matches.

The result offered a major lift for head coach Michael Carrick, whose position had come under growing pressure following a difficult run of results. United looked headed for another disappointing night after Roma took control early, exposing defensive weaknesses and scoring twice before half-time.

Matias Soulé opened the scoring for the Italian side before Donyell Malen converted a penalty to double their advantage. United struggled to respond, with sections of the Old Trafford crowd booing the team as they went into the break trailing 2-0.

The situation appeared to worsen early in the second half when Carlos Baleba was forced off with a suspected hamstring injury. However, the momentum shifted after Matheus Cunha won a penalty, which Bruno Fernandes converted following a retake to reduce the deficit.

United grew in confidence as the home supporters raised their voices. Bryan Mbeumo came close to equalising when one effort struck both posts, while Roma were forced into desperate defensive interventions as the hosts increased the pressure.

The comeback gathered pace when a poor clearance from Leonardo Balerdi fell to Cunha, who calmly finished to make it 2-2. The Brazilian then completed the turnaround with a superb near-post strike after receiving a pass from young substitute Shea Lacey, sending Old Trafford into celebration.

Cunha was subsequently sent off following a foul, leaving United to negotiate a tense closing period with 10 men. However, Carrick’s players held on to secure a victory that ended their 10-game winless run and provided a much-needed boost to the club.

After the match, captain Bruno Fernandes said the players understood the frustration of supporters and hoped the result would mark the beginning of a turnaround. He also addressed speculation surrounding his relationship with Carrick, denying reports that the two had needed to clear the air following his omission from the starting line-up against Bournemouth.

Fernandes said his absence was a managerial decision based on his performances and insisted it had not affected his belief in Carrick, the coaching staff or his teammates. The midfielder added that the team remained determined to improve its results.

Carrick described the victory as an important night for the players and supporters, praising their response after a difficult first half. He also singled out Lacey for his contribution, particularly the assist for Cunha’s winning goal, while noting the teenager’s willingness to defend when the team needed him.

Although the victory does not erase United’s recent struggles, the comeback provided evidence of renewed determination at Old Trafford. For Carrick, it was a result that offered relief and a possible foundation for rebuilding confidence.
