Ogun Government Suspends Eselu of Iselu Over Alleged Partisan Politics

The Ogun State Government has suspended the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom in Yewa North Local Government Area, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi, with immediate effect over alleged involvement in partisan political activities.
The suspension was communicated in a letter dated October 20, 2026, signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat.
According to the letter, the decision followed several complaints about the monarch’s conduct, particularly allegations that he had participated in overtly political activities, some of which were reportedly publicised by him.
The state government said the suspension was approved by the State Executive Council under Section 52(1) of the Ogun State Obas and Chiefs Law, 2021. The measure will remain in place pending a detailed investigation into the allegations.
The government maintained that partisan political involvement by traditional rulers was contrary to customary law and prohibited by statute. It warned that such conduct could undermine the dignity of traditional institutions and threaten peaceful coexistence among residents with different political affiliations.
As part of the suspension conditions, Oba Akinyemi has been directed to vacate the palace and stay away from the premises throughout the suspension period. He has also been instructed not to present himself as, or claim recognition as, the Eselu of Iselu Kingdom while the suspension remains in force.
The monarch has further been prohibited from wearing or using items associated with the traditional office, including a crown, ileke, beaded staff, irukere and other royal paraphernalia.
The letter also requires Oba Akinyemi to make himself available for any meeting or hearing convened by the state government as part of the investigation. Copies were sent to the Secretary of Yewa North Local Government and the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, for their information and necessary action.
The government said the suspension was intended to protect peace, order and good governance in the state while the allegations are reviewed. The reported suspension is an administrative measure pending investigation and does not, by itself, establish that the allegations against the monarch have been proven.
