NBA Sets Up Three-Member Panel to Probe N100m Imo Government Gift to Owerri Branch

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has established a three-member investigative panel to examine allegations of financial impropriety involving a N100 million gift from the Imo State Government to its Owerri branch.
The association announced the decision on Thursday, October 15, 2026, following concerns raised by members over the receipt, management and disbursement of the funds. NBA President Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, constituted the panel to ensure the allegations are examined through a transparent and orderly process.
The investigation followed a complaint by members of the Owerri branch against its chairman and other executive members. They reportedly questioned how the N100 million was spent and alleged that the branch leadership had failed to account for the expenditure. The source also said 183 branch members had requested an Extraordinary General Meeting.
The panel comprises NBA General Secretary Afam Okeke, Third Vice-President Iniobong Irene Pepple and Treasurer Esther Jimoh. According to Badejo-Okusanya, the committee will examine the branch’s financial records, receive submissions from those concerned and make recommendations based on its findings.
The NBA president directed the committee to submit its report to her office on or before October 30, 2026. The panel will also attend the planned Extraordinary General Meeting as her representatives to observe proceedings and help ensure that the meeting is conducted in an orderly manner.
Badejo-Okusanya stressed that setting up the committee should not be interpreted as a finding of wrongdoing against any individual. She said everyone whose conduct comes under scrutiny would have a fair opportunity to respond to the allegations.
She also called for the preservation and release of relevant financial records to support a thorough examination. According to the NBA president, accountability must be pursued alongside due process to maintain members’ confidence in the association.
The investigation is expected to clarify how the N100 million government gift was handled by the Owerri branch. However, the allegations remain subject to the panel’s findings, and no conclusion of financial misconduct has been established by the announcement of the probe.
