Church Secures Crucifix With Chains After Ecuador Priest Dies in Mass Tragedy

A church has reportedly secured a large crucifix to a wall with heavy chains following the death of a Catholic priest in Ecuador, who was fatally struck by a falling crucifix while celebrating Mass.

A video circulating on social media shows the unidentified church taking the additional precaution of fastening the religious structure to the wall. In the footage, a priest wearing a helmet conducts a service beneath the secured crucifix, accompanied by two altar boys.

The development comes after the death of Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, a Roman Catholic priest who died on October 17, 2026, when a heavy crucifix fell on him during an evening Mass in Guayaquil, southwestern Ecuador.

Footage from the livestreamed service showed the crucifix detaching from the wall behind the altar and striking Sánchez on the head. Members of the congregation could be heard crying for help as worshippers attempted to assist him.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the priest’s death in a statement shared on its Facebook page, saying he died while celebrating the Eucharist.

“We share the images of the Eucharist in memory of our beloved Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, CSsR., whom the Lord called to his bosom last night, October 17, while he was celebrating Holy Mass,” the statement read.

The archdiocese also announced a memorial Eucharistic celebration led by Cardinal Luis Cabrera, Archbishop of Guayaquil, alongside auxiliary bishops, priests, members of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and parishioners.

Sánchez belonged to the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic religious order founded in 1732. His death prompted an outpouring of condolences and prayers from people who expressed sympathy for his family, fellow clergy and congregation.

Although the video showing the chained crucifix has attracted attention online, the identity of the church and the circumstances surrounding the safety measure remain unclear. It has not been independently confirmed whether the precaution was introduced specifically in response to Sánchez’s death.

The tragedy serves as a remembrance of Sánchez and his final moments while carrying out his religious duties. It has also drawn attention to the importance of ensuring that heavy structures mounted above altars are securely installed to protect clergy and worshippers.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil thanked those who sent messages of condolence and called for prayers for the eternal rest of the late priest.
