Joe Cole Calls Fabian Ruiz One of Football’s Most Underrated Players After PSG Beat Barcelona

Former England midfielder Joe Cole has praised Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Fabian Ruiz, describing the Spaniard as potentially one of the most underrated players in football history after his decisive performance against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.

Ruiz scored late in the contest at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night, helping PSG secure a victory over the Spanish giants. Cole, speaking during his punditry duties for TNT Sports, said the midfielder deserved greater recognition for his consistent performances at club and international level.

PSG took the lead through Desire Doue in the 38th minute, but Barcelona responded through Xavi Espart in the 55th minute. The match then developed into an intense contest as both teams traded goals in the closing stages.

Lucas Hernandez restored PSG’s advantage in the 72nd minute before Lamine Yamal brought Barcelona level again seven minutes later. Vitinha struck in the 81st minute to put the hosts ahead, setting the stage for Ruiz to deliver the decisive blow.

Ruiz found the net in the 86th minute, converting a cross at the back post to give PSG a two-goal cushion and strengthen their position in the match. Reacting to the goal, Cole said: “They put it to bed. [He] could be the most underrated player of all time.”

Cole also highlighted Ruiz’s collection of major honours and his importance to PSG manager Luis Enrique. “He’s won everything in the game, Champions League, does his job, always in. And what I would say is, they look a stronger side with him in,” the former Chelsea and England midfielder said.

Since joining PSG from Napoli in 2022, Ruiz has established himself as a key figure in the French club’s midfield. According to the supplied report, the Barcelona match goal was his 18th in 178 appearances for the Parisian side.

His reported honours with PSG include Ligue 1 titles, Coupe de France trophies, Trophée des Champions victories and European and international club titles. His achievements with Spain have also added to his reputation, although the specific international tournament and trophy claims in the source require verification.

Cole’s assessment underlines the value of midfielders whose influence extends beyond goals and assists. Ruiz’s ability to contribute defensively, maintain possession and support attacking moves has made him an important part of PSG’s system, reinforcing the pundit’s view that his performances deserve greater recognition.
