Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says he is prepared to bear the political consequences of President Bola Tinubu losing the 2027 presidential election to either Atiku Abubakar or Peter Obi.
Wike made the declaration during a media chat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, while defending his decision to openly support Tinubu’s bid for another term in office.
The FCT minister said his position has made him a major target of opposition politicians and critics, but insisted that he was fully aware of the risks before choosing to back the President.
According to Wike, the criticism surrounding his political alignment would not force him to reconsider his support for Tinubu. He maintained that his priority remains ensuring the President secures re-election in 2027.
Wike acknowledged that there could be consequences if Tinubu eventually loses the election, particularly because of his strong public backing of the President. However, he said he was willing to take responsibility for his political decision.
The former Rivers State governor has remained one of the prominent opposition figures who crossed political lines to support Tinubu despite belonging to the Peoples Democratic Party. His stance has continued to attract criticism from some members of his party and supporters of the opposition.
With Atiku and Peter Obi expected to feature prominently in the opposition battle ahead of 2027, Wike’s continued support for Tinubu places him at the centre of an increasingly intense political contest.
Wike, however, remains unapologetic about his position, insisting that political attacks and the possibility of future consequences will not make him abandon his support for Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
