The Nigerian Army has rescued the wife of a retired brigadier general who was abducted from her residence in Abuja, following a coordinated operation by troops of the Guards Brigade and Army Headquarters Garrison.
The woman, identified as Mrs Adonkie, wife of retired Brigadier General Basil Adonkie, was abducted on Tuesday, September 1, according to a statement issued by the Army on Wednesday.
The Army said troops immediately launched a pursuit operation after receiving information about the abduction. Acting on what it described as credible intelligence, the troops moved through the Aco Estate–Goza Community axis and made contact with the kidnappers.
According to the Army, the kidnappers abandoned Mrs Adonkie and fled into nearby bushes as troops closed in. She was subsequently rescued at Angwan Sabo Village.
The Army said troops intensified the operation after the rescue, deploying additional personnel to block possible escape routes and continuing the pursuit along the Aco Estate–Angwan Sayawa axis.
During a follow-up operation on Wednesday, September 2, troops reportedly intercepted suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate near Gaube village in the Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
Two suspected kidnappers were arrested in the operation, while troops recovered an AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine and 19 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, the Army said.
The Army added that clearance and tracking operations were still ongoing across the area as troops worked to apprehend other members of the syndicate.
