Fresh political realignments may be unfolding ahead of the 2027 elections as Senator Rufai Hanga has officially resigned from the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC).
Hanga, who represents Kano Central Senatorial District and serves as the Deputy Minority Whip of the Senate, announced his decision in a resignation letter dated August 3, 2026. The letter was addressed to the Chairman of the NDC in Dakata Ward, Kano State.
The senator said his decision followed careful reflection and personal deliberation, explaining that he was leaving the party to pursue other personal commitments and career interests. He did not disclose whether he intends to join another political party.
“I am writing to formally notify you of my resignation from the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, effective from today, 3rd August 2026,” Hanga stated in the letter.
He added that, “After careful reflection and personal deliberation, I have decided to withdraw my membership from the party to pursue other personal commitments and career paths.”
Hanga thanked the ward executive committee and members of the party for the support and cooperation they extended to him during his time in the NDC. He said he would always value the relationships and experiences gained through his political activities within the party.
As part of the resignation process, the lawmaker said he had returned his official NDC membership card and requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register at the ward level.
“I want to express my sincere gratitude to you, the Ward Executive Committee, and the entire membership of Dakata Ward for the opportunities, support and fellowship enjoyed during my time with the party. I wish the party and its members all the best in their future endeavours,” the letter concluded.
Hanga’s resignation comes at a time when political parties are witnessing increased movements and strategic repositioning as preparations gradually gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
