The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that there was no fire outbreak at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, correcting an earlier statement that suggested part of the terminal had caught fire.
The authority had initially announced that its Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Service (ARFFS) was responding to a reported fire incident at the terminal, adding at the time that there were no casualties or injuries.
However, in a revised statement issued after preliminary assessments, FAAN explained that the incident was caused by the activation of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system, which released smoke-like gas into the affected area.
According to the agency, investigators found no evidence of an actual fire at the terminal.
“Preliminary findings indicate that there was no fire at the terminal. The smoke observed within the affected area resulted from the discharge of the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system. The reason for the activation of the fire suppression system is currently being investigated,” FAAN said.
The authority added that normal airport operations have resumed, while a detailed investigation is underway to determine what triggered the automatic fire suppression system.
FAAN thanked passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during the incident, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and security across Nigeria’s airports.
The clarification comes about five months after a fire outbreak affected Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on February 23, an incident that prompted emergency response efforts and renewed attention to airport safety systems.
