Iran Says Supreme Leader Backs New Plan to Reopen Strait of Hormuz

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said the country’s new proposal to reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz was coordinated with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, according to state media reports on Saturday.

In an interview with US broadcaster CBS, Pezeshkian said Iran would honour its commitments if the United States accepted the proposal and fulfilled its own obligations. Excerpts from the interview were released by Iran’s state news agency, IRNA.

Pezeshkian said the proposal had been discussed with the supreme leader, adding that a six-member Iranian team had been holding negotiations and was authorised to make decisions.

The team reportedly includes representatives from the military, parliament, government and other institutions.

The Strait of Hormuz, a key passage for global oil shipments, remains at the centre of tensions between Iran and the United States. The conflict has continued for nearly seven months, with diplomatic efforts yet to produce a lasting resolution.

Although Washington had not publicly responded to Iran’s latest proposal, reports indicated that US President Donald Trump had rejected the plan, which reportedly calls for an end to hostilities across the Middle East.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the conditions in the proposal were consistent with those outlined in a memorandum of understanding signed with the United States in June.

Among the reported conditions are the release of frozen Iranian assets estimated at more than $12 billion, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil and an end to the US naval blockade of Iran.
