Motorists in Enugu State now face immediate arrest and prosecution for violating traffic laws as the state police command begins a stricter enforcement drive across the state.
The directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Giwa, following what the command described as growing disregard for traffic regulations by motorists. Police said the violations have contributed to traffic congestion, road crashes, blocked movement, deaths and damage to property.
Giwa said the enforcement follows a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for traffic laws to be enforced nationwide. The move is aimed at restoring order on Nigerian roads and improving the safety of road users.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed the development in a statement on Tuesday. Giwa directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, the command’s Legal Officer and the State Traffic Officer to coordinate the enforcement.
The officers were instructed to ensure that motorists who breach existing traffic laws are arrested and prosecuted in line with relevant laws and regulations.
However, Giwa warned police officers involved in the operation against abusing the rights of motorists and other road users. He ordered that enforcement must be carried out professionally, with respect for human dignity and within the limits of the law.
The commissioner also urged all motorists, including police officers and other security personnel, to familiarise themselves with traffic regulations and comply with them. He warned that failure to do so could result in arrest and prosecution.
According to the command, strict observance of traffic rules will help reduce congestion, prevent avoidable road crashes and improve the movement of vehicles across Enugu State.
The police said the enforcement would cover existing traffic laws and regulations applicable to motorists throughout the state, with officers expected to ensure compliance while maintaining professionalism.
