A 28-year-old widow identified as Tosin has become the focus of widespread public attention after alleging that members of her late husband’s family threatened, intimidated and attempted to dispossess her of her home and property just days after his death.
The case, which gained traction on social media after being shared by activist Harrison Gwamnishu, prompted a swift response from the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA). The agency has confirmed that one of the alleged perpetrators has been arrested while investigations continue.
A video posted online showed a man identified as Tosin’s father-in-law padlocking the gate of the family residence, reportedly preventing the widow from accessing the property. Sharing the footage, Gwamnishu alleged that the in-laws were attempting to take over the deceased’s assets despite the presence of the couple’s two young children.
According to the activist, Tosin’s husband died on July 20, 2026. He claimed that shortly after the burial, the deceased’s father, mother, brother and sister-in-law moved into the family home at No. 8 Jumofak, Igbo Oluwo Estate, Koya Adeniran, Ikorodu. He further alleged that the widow and her two sons were ordered to move all their belongings into a single room while some of the deceased’s personal property had already been shared among relatives. He also claimed there were plans to sell the late man’s vehicle.
Gwamnishu said the widow had been living in fear and appealed to the Lagos State Government to protect her and her children from intimidation, unlawful eviction and any attempt to deprive the children of their late father’s inheritance. He maintained that no widow should have to fight for shelter, dignity and justice while still mourning the loss of a spouse.
Responding on Tuesday, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency said it immediately reached out to the widow after becoming aware of the viral reports. According to the agency, Tosin alleged that she had faced threats to her life, physical assault and continued intimidation following her husband’s death.
The agency disclosed that the matter had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division and that it had begun working closely with the investigating officers. Preliminary feedback from the police, according to the DSVA, confirmed that the alleged perpetrator had been arrested and is currently in police custody while investigations continue.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the widow and her children and ensuring that justice is served in line with the law. The agency also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting cases of domestic and sexual violence through its official reporting channels.
