Yobe Court Sentences Abubakar Musa to Death for Killing Wife

A Yobe State High Court sitting in Damaturu has sentenced a 45-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, popularly known as Daddy, to death by hanging for the killing of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.
The court reportedly convicted Musa of culpable homicide after finding that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. The judgment marks a development in a case that attracted public concern following Mamman’s death in January 2024.
Musa was arrested on January 4, 2024, after his wife was found fatally injured at New Bra-Bra Estate in Damaturu, according to reports.
The then Yobe State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, said police received a distress call at about 4:48 a.m. on the day of the incident. Preliminary information indicated that the couple had been on the same bed when Mamman was allegedly attacked with a sharp object.
Abdulkarim said the victim sustained severe bleeding and died from her injuries. Police arrested Musa for questioning, while detectives from the homicide unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department began investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Mamman’s death drew reactions from her workplace and civil society organisations in Yobe State. In a newsletter published in February 2024, Yobe State University identified her as a member of its staff and said the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mala Mohammed Daura, had expressed sadness over her death.
The university also called on security agencies to ensure that those responsible were brought to justice. Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni similarly sympathised with Mamman’s family and said anyone found culpable would face the law.
The reported death sentence brings renewed attention to the case, which began with the police investigation in January 2024. Details of the court’s full judgment, including the judge’s name, the specific date of sentencing and whether Musa intends to appeal, were not provided in the available report.
