Two police officers in Delta State have been demoted after a disciplinary panel found them guilty of extortion and misconduct following a viral video that showed them receiving money from a motorist through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal inside a police station.
The Delta State Police Command announced the sanctions in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, saying the disciplinary action followed an orderly room trial ordered after the incident attracted widespread public attention.
According to the Command, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, both attached to C Division, Asaba, were found guilty of Disobedience to Lawful Order, Extortion, and Discreditable Conduct in violation of the Police Act, 2020.
The case stemmed from a viral video recorded on January 13, 2026, which captured the officers allegedly collecting money from a motorist through a POS terminal within the police station. The footage sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over unlawful extortion by some police personnel.
Following the conclusion of the disciplinary proceedings, the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, approved the panel’s recommendations. Inspector Jeremiah was reduced in rank from Inspector to Sergeant, while Corporal Ehirim was demoted from Corporal to Constable.
Reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s stance against extortion, Oyeniyi stressed that the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has prohibited the use of Point-of-Sale terminals and other electronic payment platforms within police stations and formations nationwide. He warned that no officer is authorised to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise.
The Commissioner urged officers across the command to uphold professionalism, integrity and respect for citizens’ rights, adding that any personnel found engaging in similar misconduct would face strict disciplinary measures.
He also encouraged members of the public to continue reporting incidents of police misconduct through the appropriate complaint channels, assuring residents that every verified complaint would be investigated in line with the law as part of efforts to strengthen accountability and restore public confidence in the Force.
