Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has urged residents to embrace responsible citizenship by respecting constituted authorities, protecting public infrastructure and placing the state’s collective interest above personal ambitions.

The governor made the appeal after a Mass at the Government House Chapel in Owerri, where he stressed that sustainable development depends not only on government policies but also on the attitude and civic responsibility of citizens.

Uzodimma expressed concern over what he described as the deliberate destruction of public infrastructure and the illegal occupation of government property, warning that such actions undermine the state’s development efforts.

“Our attitude is important,” the governor said, urging residents to respect public facilities and refrain from encroaching on government land.

He noted that it was disheartening to see roads and other public projects damaged or misused after significant public funds had been invested in their construction and maintenance.

The governor also challenged politicians and residents to separate personal ambitions from the broader interests of the state, insisting that public service should always be guided by a commitment to the common good.

“For you to be a politician, you must first be a citizen of Nigeria. Separate our common interest from your personal interest,” Uzodimma stated.

Addressing those with political aspirations, he encouraged them to remain patient and trust God’s timing, saying delayed ambitions should not lead to discouragement or actions that could undermine the state’s progress.

Earlier during the service, the Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, Rev. Fr. Gilbert Alaribe, called on Christians to demonstrate genuine discipleship through sacrifice, generosity and unwavering faith. He said true love for God and humanity requires commitment and selflessness.

Governor Uzodimma’s remarks come as the state government continues to advocate greater public participation in preserving infrastructure and supporting initiatives aimed at driving development across Imo State.
