Morocco have made history once again, becoming the first African nation to qualify for the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over the Netherlands.
The Atlas Lions edged the Dutch 3-2 on penalties after an intense 1-1 draw that remained deadlocked through extra time, delivering another memorable moment for African football on the global stage.
Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the hero of the night, producing a decisive save during the shootout after the Netherlands had already squandered two penalties. Midfielder Ismael Saibari then calmly converted the winning spot-kick to send Morocco into the next round.
The victory builds on Morocco’s remarkable rise in international football following their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they became the first African team to reach the last four.
Despite controlling large spells of Tuesday’s encounter and restricting the Netherlands to limited clear-cut chances, Morocco found themselves trailing late in normal time when Cody Gakpo broke the deadlock, seemingly putting the Dutch on course for qualification.
Morocco refused to give up. With time running out, Bilal El Khannouss Talbi delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, where defender Issa Diop, who had pushed forward in search of an equaliser, powered home a header to send the match into extra time.
Neither side could find a breakthrough during the additional 30 minutes, forcing the contest into a penalty shootout where Morocco displayed greater composure to secure a famous victory.
The result cements Morocco’s status as one of the tournament’s standout performers and ensures Africa will have at least one representative in the knockout stage, as the Atlas Lions continue their quest for another historic World Cup campaign.
