The Oyo State Police Command has revealed that the abduction of the younger sister of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and her twin sons was the result of a carefully planned surveillance operation carried out over several weeks.
Police said the kidnapping syndicate monitored the family’s movements, studied their daily routines and even attempted to recruit an insider before executing the operation in Ibadan.
Addressing journalists on Sunday, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed that the victims — 42-year-old Olaide Busayo Adegoke and her 11-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul — were abducted on June 3 while she was taking the children to school.
According to the police, four armed men travelling in an unregistered ash-coloured Toyota Corolla intercepted the victims around 7:30 a.m. on Elewura Street, off Ring Road, Ibadan, before taking them away.
Investigations later revealed that the gang had spent weeks gathering intelligence on the family. Detectives discovered that the suspects had allegedly tracked the family’s movements, monitored the children’s school activities and documented aspects of their daily lifestyle.
“The gang monitored the family’s movements, routines and the schools attended by the children as part of a wider surveillance and reconnaissance operation,” Olayinka said.
Police further disclosed that the suspects had attempted to recruit a household staff member identified simply as Segun in May as part of efforts to gain inside information about the family.
Investigators reportedly recovered digital evidence, including photographs of the family’s vehicles, school surroundings and other details believed to have been used in planning the abduction.
Following a distress report, security agencies launched a coordinated operation involving the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT), the Oyo State Police Command and other tactical units.
A major breakthrough came with the arrest of a suspect identified as Wale Abolalewa, popularly known as “Oloro,” who was already on the police watchlist. His arrest reportedly led investigators to another key suspect, Dare Oyedele, also known as “Solution.”
Using intelligence gathered from the suspects, operatives traced the gang’s hideout to the Lado Community in the Ayegun area of Ibadan.
Police said a rescue operation was launched on June 6. During the raid, a suspect identified as Kelechi allegedly opened fire on officers. A gun battle followed, resulting in the death of Kelechi and another unidentified gang member.
After securing the hideout, operatives successfully rescued Mrs Adegoke and her twin sons unharmed. The victims were placed under protective custody before being reunited with their family.
Security operatives also recovered three pump-action rifles, 14 live cartridges, the Toyota Corolla allegedly used during the kidnapping, a battle axe, a hammer, face masks, suspected hard drugs and items believed to be criminal charms.
The police said efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang who reportedly escaped during the operation with gunshot wounds.
Authorities have urged hospitals, healthcare providers and traditional bone setters to report anyone seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot injuries, warning that such information could help security agencies track down the fleeing suspects.
